The VOC Cutlass

This Cutlass design is taken from an original made to the specifications of the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC), dating from about 1780. The lightly antiqued high carbon steel blade has a distal taper, with fullers on both sides along the spine, and handles well. It is fully tempered and while provided un-edged, for re-enactment purposes, it is capable of taking and holding a useful edge. The solid brass hilt basket is matched by the locket and chape of the leather-covered scabbard.

Maintainence and Safety Precautions

Unless otherwise stated, these Weapons are produced of carbon steel. If it is not made of Stainless Steel, it will rust. Care must be taken to prevent rusting. The best way to protect against rust is to maintain a light coating of machine oil on the weapon at all times. Fingerprints and other skin contact can etch steel indelibly because of the oils and acids in human skin, so always wipe the item clean and re-oil it after use or handling. Do not store carbon steel blades in a scabbard, most scabbards are made of commercially tanned leather that has a high quantity of tannic acid in it. This acid will corrode a blade rapidly and usually does permanent damage to the polish.

Your Weapon is not a toy. These items are historically accurate reproductions of combat arms. They are sharp and pointed and can hurt you. Always follow safety precautions. Shem-Inc is not responsible for injuries or damage caused by the use or misuse of these items.
